Workplace noise exposure causes a 5 fold hearing loss increase
A study from the US National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) has considered the effects of exposure to excessive noise and the impact on hearing difficulty and tinnitus across various different types of work.
The study, which looked at American workers, found that where employees had been exposed to excessive levels of occupational noise they are nearly 5 times more likely to experience hearing problems or tinnitus than workers who were not exposed to noise.
The NIOSH study found that the industries with the most significant higher risks of hearing difficulty and tinnitus were the fishing and hunting industries as well as agriculture and forestry.
The study found that where workers had been exposed to occupational noise during their working life, 23% had a hearing difficulty, 15% had tinnitus and 9% had suffered with both problems.
For workers who were never exposed to noise at work only 7% had hearing difficulty, 5% had tinnitus and 2% had both conditions.
NIOSH Director Dr John Howard, M.D. said “hearing loss can greatly impact the worker’s overall health and well-being”.
The NIOSH study was published in the American Journel of Industrial Medicine.
