UK Academics in European link up to tackle tinnitus

Scientists at Anglia Ruskin University have commenced a project in collaboration with Linkoping University in Sweden to attempt to help sufferers of tinnitus.

Tinnitus sufferers experience ringing, buzzing or whistling sounds in their ears, which other people cannot hear.

Tinnitus is most common amongst older adults.  It usually, cannot be cured.

Tinnitus can be particularly debilitating, as people who suffer with the condition often experience problems with sleeping or concentrating and they can suffer from anxiety and depression as a result of their symptoms.

The collaboration between Anglia Ruskin University and Linkoping University is called Tackling Tinnitus and is an internet based project.  The aim is to provide an online programme which shares a range of techniques allowing people with tinnitus to cope better with their symptoms.

Linkoping University is one of the leaders in the area of internet based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Eldre Beukes from the Anglia Ruskin University Resonant Hearing Sciences Department set up the launch of the Tackling Tinnitus project:-

Despite much research, a cure for tinnitus remains to be found.

There are however strategies that are effective at reducing the impact tinnitus may have.  Not everyone is aware of this though.  Tinnitus sufferers therefore, often feel isolated and hopeless.

Tackling Tinnitus aims to empower those experiencing tinnitus to be able to control their tinnitus, with flexibility of carrying out the treatment programme online, whenever and wherever it suits them.

The techniques shared are largely based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which are very effective, but not readily accessible to those experiencing tinnitus.

This programme is completely free and provides equal access and the same information for all participants, regardless of where they live, bypassing the postcode lottery that can be found in healthcare.”
