Scientists discover that sea anemome proteins could hold the key to repairing damaged human hearing
Deafness in humans can be caused when the air cells in the cochlea of the human ear are damaged.
Such damage can occur through exposure to excessive levels of noise in a noisy workplace, musical areas or when carrying out a noisy activities such as motorcycling or shooting.
Once cochlea hairs in humans or other mammals are damaged then the hearing loss or tinnitus which results is usually considered to be permanent.
Recent scientific research has however indicated that sea anemones may hold the key to the ability to potentially repair traumatised human hair cells in the future.
In a recent article in the Journal of Experimental Biology scientists discovered that sea anemones have the capacity to repair damaged hair bundles. The underwater creatures were found to secrete repair proteins.
Scientific experiements using repair proteins derived from sea anemones were shown to assist in restoring normal hearing function to damaged hair cells in the cochlea of mice.
Ultimately the findings of the research may allow scientists to develop ways to repair damaged human cochlea hairs. This could potentially ultimately lead to a cure to being developed to noise induced deafness and tinnitus and other forms of deafness arising from damages cochlea hairs.
No immediate cure or treatment is expected to be available however.
