Number of people with hearing loss in the UK rises to 11 million

In a new report entitled “Hearing Matters” the UK charity Action on Hearing Loss (formerly the Royal National Institute for the Deaf) has recently reported that there are now 11 million people (1 in 6) in the UK, who suffer with hearing loss.

The report estimates that this number will increase to 1 in 5 people (15.6 million) in the next 20 years as a result of an ageing population.

Despite this, hearing loss is the only area of medical practice that has seen a decrease in research funding in the last 10 years.   In their report, Action on Hearing Loss is calling upon the government to tackle the impact of deafness and tinnitus as a major public health condition and to restrict hearing aid cuts in the NHS.

The Chief Executive of Action on Hearing Loss Paul Brackell said :-

“With massive unmet need, we need NHS Commissioners to ensure that services are in place to support the increasing number of people with hearing loss, with research showing that people with hearing loss are more likely to develop dementia and depression …

…more investment is needed into research and cures for hearing loss and tinnitus as less than 1% of UK medical research funding is spent on this major health issue….

…with proper investment, treatments for hearing loss and tinnitus could be available by 2020, and we believe that we can find a cure within a generation”.

The Hearing Matters report was produced by Action on Hearing Loss with the support of Boots Hearing Care.
