High risk of hearing problems for dental hygienists

A survey in the United States has found that dental hygienists are at particular risk of developing noise induced hearing loss.

The study, published recently in the Journal of Dentla Hygiene, obtained information from over 1000 dental hygienists, who had each been practising for over 20 years.

The study found that dental hygienists reported hearing loss at a greater rate and a younger age than the US population as a whole. The average age of those surveyed was 56 years and 40% of respondents reported having problems with their hearing.

Dental hygienists are regularly exposed to high levels of noise from dental equipment, such as ultrasonic scalers, which have been measured as generating noise levels as high as  86 decibels.

In the UK, employees exposed to this level of noise must be issued with hearing protection by their employers, to reduce the risk of damage to hearing caused by noise exposure.

In the US study, 17% of respondents reported having hearing difficulty caused by the use of ultrasonic scalers. 91% of these had a hearing difficulty confirmed following a test by an audiologist.

Those respondents who had hearing difficulties were found to be twice as likely  to have made significant use of ultrasonic scalers in their working day, when compared to other respondents.
