High levels of noise in fitness classes may cause deafness
Studies in the United States have revealed that music played at fitness classes is often at dangerously high levels.
Testing by New York TV station PIX 11, revealed that at four different fitness classes, music was played constantly, with noise levels consistently at 100 decibels. The maximum level recorded was 115 decibels.
Many fitness classes rely on music to encourage participants to work out as hard as they can, but the excessive volume levels recorded of noise give rise to concern about the impact of the noise levels on both instructors and those taking part in the classes.
In the UK, employers have to provide hearing protection to their employees when noise levels reach 85 decibels. Scientists advise that exposure to noise at 100 decibels for longer than 15 minutes may give rise to a risk of developing permanent noise-induced hearing loss or tinnitus. At 115 decibels the same risk arises after only 28 seconds.
Damage caused to hearing by noise exposure is permanent and cannot be reversed.
“When we see [noise exposure] at 99 dB or above for more than an hour on a regular basis, there’s a very high risk of hearing loss. Once it’s gone, you’re not getting it back,” said. Dr. Leslie Stengert, a health professor of Indiana University in Pittsburgh in the US, and part of the American College of Sports Medicine.
