Drugs to prevent noise induced hearing loss currently being trialled
A new radical drug trial is currently taking place in Fort Jackson, USA, relating to the prevention of hearing damage as a result of excessive levels of noise. The trial involves the incorporation of a new drug, currently in liquid form, to be drunk before the expected noise exposure is to take place.
This new anti-hearing loss drug uses an organic substance called d-methionine, this can also be found in certain types of food. In theory the drug works by using the body’s natural defences to guard against hearing loss.
When ear cells are exposed to excessive levels of noise they release molecules which react and damage the tissues within the inner ear, leading to noise induced hearing loss. The drug works to balance out these harmful molecules by making use of anti-oxidants in order to strengthen the body’s healing response.
The clinic is being conducted at the US army camp due to the frequent high levels of noise exposure experienced by members of the military. Clearly the noise from a gun or a grenade will be extremely loud, but in addition, soldiers are often exposed to noise from other heavy equipment and machinery such as aircraft, carriers and tanks for example. Clearly the life of a soldier is very noisy vocation.
The US Army is particularly concerned about the high levels of noise induced hearing loss affecting not only by those who suffered excessive noise exposure during service in the past, but also current soldiers. There is a concern that soldiers who are suffering with hearing loss may be unable to follow commands correctly. Also, this is now the most common form of compensation claim pursued against the American Armed Forces.
If this drug is successful, then the applications for its use may spread much further than for military purposes. Employers who operate noisy factories, in mines, or who provide employees with loud, powered tools, are all likely to benefit from the use of the drug in the workplace.
