Deafness compensation awarded to former British Steel and ICI worker

What’s My Deafness Claim Worth’s specialist Industrial Deafness Solicitors have successfully pursued a claim for noise induced hearing loss compensation for a former employee of British Steel and ICI.

Mr H was employed at the Dorman Long Steelworks in Cleveland, Teesside in the early 1960s.  This company became part of the nationalised British Steel in 1967.

As an Apprentice Maintenance Electrician in the steelworks, he worked throughout the plant and was exposed to considerable levels of noise from the various steelmaking processes.

He worked in rolling mills where steel rolling machines and electric steel cutting saws produced exceptional levels of noise.  He also worked in the vicinity of blast furnaces and coke conveyor belts which again were exceptionally loud.

After his apprenticeship at the steelworks, he was subsequently employed at the Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) plant in Wilton, Cleveland as an Electrical Fitter. He worked near to conveyor belts and large industrial mixers which mixed chemicals, both of which produced considerable noise.

Mr H was also exposed to very loud levels of noise intermittently from explosive blasts known as aerial decompressions.

In both jobs he was subjected to noise that was loud enough that he would not be able to communicate with people near to him without shouting.  Even communicating by shouting was impossible at times.
