Causes of Hearing Loss and Tinnitus

In order to obtain compensation for noise induced hearing loss and tinnitus anyone suffering with those conditions has to establish that they were caused by negligent exposure to excessive noise.

The most common causes of hearing loss are ageing and exposure to excessive noise. However there are a number of other potential causes which need to be considered and eliminated in order to establish that an individual has noise induced hearing loss and tinnitus. If these conditions are not caused by exposure to excessive noise then no claim will be possible.

Certain types of medication are known to give rise to a risk of hearing loss. These are known as “ototoxic” medications and these include:-

  • Antimalarial drugs
  • Certain antibiotics such as gentamicin, streptomycin, neomycin
  • Certain cancer drugs
  • Diuretics (prescribed to relieve fluid build up in the heart)

This is not a complete list and many other medications can potentially have an impact on hearing.

A person’s diet can also affect their hearing. Too much sugar can cause constriction of blood vessels which affects hearing.

Too much fat can cause high cholesterol which reduces which reduces the flow of oxygen and nutrients to parts of the ear, again potentially causing hearing loss.

The previous medical conditions a person has had can also have an impact on their hearing. Medical conditions which may impact on hearing include measles, mumps, multiple sclerosis, trauma to the head and diabetes.

It is important to remember that where someone has noticed symptoms of hearing loss and tinnitus occurring and where they have a history of working in a noisy environment, by far the most likely cause of those problems will have been exposure to high noise levels at work.

However, when pursuing a claim for noise induced hearing loss and tinnitus it is important to ensure that other causes of hearing loss and tinnitus are considered.
