Can noise induced hearing loss be prevented by vitamins

Noise induced hearing loss occurs when parts of the inner ear are damaged by excessive noise levels.

The synapses that connect the nerves and hair cells in the cochlea within the inner ear become damaged and the ability to hear is reduced.

A 2014 study has suggested that taking a simple chemical compound could prevent or guard against the development of noise induced hearing loss or potentially even restore hearing in people who have suffered noise damage.

Researchers from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York reported their findings in the journal, Cell Metabolism.

The authors of the report were attempting to explore potential treatments for noise induced hearing loss by treating mice with the chemical nicotinamide riboside (NR) before or after exposing the mice to excessive noise levels.

Dr Kevin Brown of Weill Cornell, lead author of the report stated that:-

“[one of the] major limitations in managing disorders of the inner ear, including hearing loss, is that there are a very limited number of treatment options”.  From their research the report’s authors were able to observe that NR successfully prevented damage to the synaptic connections in the mice preventing long and short term hearing loss and the team found that the treatment was equally effective when given to the mice after they were exposed to noise.”

The findings of the report could ultimately lead to development of treatments for noise induced hearing loss. No pharmaceutical treatments for the condition are imminent however.

If you have difficulty hearing, for example in a crowded room or if you turn the television up louder than other people would like then you may have sustained noise induced hearing loss, if you have worked in an excessively noisy environment in the past.
