Are some people more susceptible to noise induced hearing loss?
A recent study carried out by the University of Southern California (USC) has concluded that some people may be more susceptible to noise induced hearing loss than others.
Neuroscientists from USC concluded that there may be a genetic susceptibility to noise induced hearing loss which makes some people more at risk than others.
Professor Rick A Friedman, Professor of Otolaryngology and Neurosurgery at Keck School of Medicine at USC led the study. He stated that:-
“Understanding the biological processes that effects susceptibility to hearing loss due to loud noise exposure is an important factor in reducing the risk [of noise induced hearing loss occurring]…. Nothing can compare to protecting the hearing you have and preventing hearing loss in the first place.”
The study USC carried out was a genome-wide search of the entire genome to see if any particular genes could be identified which were associated with noise induced hearing loss.
The study identified the Nox3 gene has been the key gene for indicating that an individual may be more susceptible to noise induced hearing loss.
The discovery was made following tests on mice. However, the findings are not expected to give rise to any immediate new cure or treatment for noise induced hearing loss.
