Acupuncture effective for hearing loss
Research published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Medicine has found that acupuncture can treat hearing loss. The hearing loss that can be treated by this method is loss caused by damage to the auditory nerve. This is the nerve which transmits signals from the inner ear to the brain and can be damaged by both age and noise. The researchers found that acupuncture can significantly improve the hearing of patients and found that acupuncture treatment in conjunction with medication is more effective than medication alone.
In traditional Chinese medicine both acupuncture and herbal medicine have continuously been used for the treatment of sensorineural hearing loss. There are around 200 acupoints around the outer ear where, during this treatment, the needles transmit electrical signals to the brain which stimulate the healing of the inner ear cells. It not only treats hearing loss but also sinusitis, excess wax and tinnitus.
In another recent study conducted medication, in the form of ginger moxibustion (a type of Chinese medicine), combined with acupuncture benefitted those patients who suffered with tinnitus. After a treatment time of 17 days with 34 patients a total of 22 patients fully recovered from tinnitus, 5 patients showed moderate improvement and 5 showed a marked improvement and 3 showed no improvement. Four months after treatment 27 patients showed no worsening of symptoms of recurrence of symptoms.
The researchers who carried out both of these studies have said that the findings of the studies “verify the efficiency of acupuncture treatment of nerve deafness.”
This treatment option may become available to hearing loss and tinnitus sufferers in the near future. Many people who suffer from hearing loss and tinnitus develop this due to their exposure to noise at work.
There are many examples of industries where people have been, and to some extent continue to be, exposed to noise. The construction industry, the steel industry, the printing industry, telecommunications, to name but a few.
There are now much stricter rules on the enforcement of health and safety provisions in that hearing protection should be worn and the wearing of it enforced. However, there are still a large proportion of people who when working in heavy industry, before the 1989 and 2005 Regulations, were not provided with hearing protection and were exposed to noise levels above the legal limit.
