The North Wales Deaf Association (NWDA) was established in 1994 and provides services and resources for deaf, deafened, deafblind and hard of hearing people in North Wales. They raise awareness of the issues affecting those with hearing difficulties and look to create an environment where everyone can enjoy equal access to opportunities.
On Wednesday 30th March 2011 the NWDA held its second Big Information Day at Venue Cymru, Llandudno. Following the success of the first Big Information Day and the launch of a mobile information unit, the NWDA has seen a rise in demand for its services and has been helping to change the lives of many deaf or hard of hearing people, whether it be advice on aids and equipment or assisting with benefit applications.
QualitySolicitors Oliver & Co attended this year's even to gain information on how best to assist clients with hearing difficulties and to provide advice to those attending, particularly anyone suffering with noise induced hearing loss as a result of exposure to excessive noise at work.
Approximately 650 people attended the event. Throughout the day there were workshops on a variety of topics, tinnitus management, relaxation techniques, hearing products, sign language, lip reading and even armchair yoga!
Helen from our Industrial Disease Department attended a British Sign Language (BSL) taster session:
"I have always been interested in learning sign language and this 1 hour workshop was a great introduction. We were taught how to fingerspell the alphabet and had to spell out our names. We then went through some useful words and phrases, food and drink, animals and colours. It was a really interesting workshop, the instructors were excellent, keeping the session light hearted and leaving me eager to learn more."
Rhonwen, Head of Industrial Deafness went to the Bionic Ear Show:
"It was extremely interesting to see the mechanics of how the ear works in a practical and thought provoking way. It emphasised how precious hearing is and how we should look after our hearing as much as possible, given that hearing loss can be irreversible."
At the QualitySolicitors Oliver & Co stand everyone enjoyed the chocolates on offer and took away a nifty bookmark and pen. We also had a free prize draw to win £50 of Marks & Spencer vouchers and the lucky winner was D. Pane.
We all had a fantastic time and met lots of lovely people. We would like to thank everyone at the North Wales Deaf Association for all their assistance and making us feel so welcome at the event.
